During abrasive blasting operations, freshly prepared steel surfaces are highly susceptible to flash rusting when exposed to environments with high relative humidity (RH). If the relative humidity exceeds acceptable limits, moisture present in the air condenses on the blasted steel surface, initiating rapid oxidation prior to the application of the protective coating system.
Once flash rusting occurs, the prepared surface no longer complies with the required surface preparation standards (such as ISO 8501 / SSPC / NACE requirements), which results in rejection of the surface preparation and necessitates re-blasting and additional surface treatment. This leads to increased operational costs, project delays, and reduced coating performance.
Relative humidity is a critical environmental parameter influencing corrosion kinetics. Higher RH levels significantly accelerate the corrosion process, while maintaining lower RH levels increases the safe holding period (SHP) between blasting and coating application. Therefore, effective humidity and dew-point control within blasting and painting enclosures is essential to ensure coating integrity and compliance with international coating specifications.
To mitigate these challenges, industrial dehumidification systems are widely implemented in enclosed blasting and painting environments to maintain controlled atmospheric conditions by reducing ambient moisture content and stabilizing the dew point differential between steel surface temperature and air temperature.
